Areas of Expertise --

-- Neuropsychology

A neuropsychologist assesses how a person’s thinking and behavior have changed as a result of their brain injury or other neurological condition. Areas of assessment include memory, attention, reasoning, focus and concentration, decision-making, impulsivity, communication, comprehension, insight/orientation, and other cognitive skills. The assessment helps the neuropsychologist understand and describe what abilities have been affected the most by brain injury or other neurological conditions. From there, a treatment plan can be developed by the neuropsychologist and rehabilitation team.

The types of treatment that may be recommended after assessment include participation in neurorehabilitation therapies including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, as well as psychotherapy. These therapies help a person gradually restore functioning in key areas of their life post-injury. The neuropsychologist may also recommend that the patient receive adjunct treatment outside of the physical rehabilitation setting, including psychiatry, pain management, neuro-ophthalmology or neuro-optometry, and driving evaluations. Recommendations can also be made regarding the level of care needs or decision-making capacity, as necessary.

-- Cognitive Rehabilitation

What is Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy?

Treatments designed to address the cognitive problems that arise after a brain injury or neurological illness. There are generally two types of cognitive rehabilitation treatments:

  • Restorative treatment: goal is to improve the cognitive functioning in areas of thinking that are impaired via training (e.g. memory or attention training)

  • Compensatory treatment: goal is to learn specific strategies to compensate for problem areas such as using memory notebooks, calendars/day planners, alarms, recording devices etc.

What types of treatments are used?

Evidence-based treatments will be utilized. Treatments offered include but are not limited to:

-- Psychotherapy

Psychological counseling supports clients socially and emotionally as they adapt to the changes that they may face during the recovery period. Biofeedback, Psychoeducation, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are commonly used in treatment sessions.

-- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a collaborative process that focuses on helping clients identify thoughts and thought patterns that contribute to negative emotions. I work with the client to challenge and reframe these thoughts in a more realistic and balanced manner. This process helps the client develop healthier and more constructive thinking habits. There may also be behavioral patterns that may be reinforcing negative emotions and in these cases, I will work with the client to encourage positive behavioral changes. I teach practical coping skills and strategies to manage stress, anxiety, depression, or other emotional challenges effectively. These skills may include relaxation techniques, problem-solving, communication skills, and assertiveness training. Homework assignments: CBT typically involves assigning clients homework to practice newly learned skills and implement changes outside of therapy sessions. This reinforces learning and helps clients generalize their skills to real-life situations. CBT is evidence-based, time-limited, and goal-oriented: CBT is focused on specific treatment goals. The therapy aims to provide clients with the tools they need to manage challenges independently after therapy has concluded.
